Accompanying Evaluation Powerpoint

This is the powerpoint we used when doing our evaluation. Some parts of it are empty as we talk around them in the actual evaluation :) It had to be split into three parts, as Slideshare (The site we use to convert the powerpoints) doesn't allow us to embed big items. Part one:

Our Opening Sequence - Final Draft:

Over This Year:

Over the course of this year, we've made arrangements about when to meet and we kept a brief table about who came to these meetings and what happened at them :)

Self Assessment Of Our Final Draft.

When assessing ourselves, we were nearly spot on with our teachers marking, as she actually gave us 53/60. As a group, we are really pleased with our mark as we worked really hard to get it, which is evident from our first drafts where we were on Level 2.

Making Drew's Blog.

To develop our opening sequence, our teacher told us to use a blog instead of the words on the sheets of paper. To do this, we now obviously required a blog.
I made the blog for the third draft and we used it ever since. Making up the posts took a while, but the completed opening sequence made it worthwhile. :)

Here is the link to the blog I created:  http://the-unnatural-supernatural.blogspot.co.uk/

Pictures Of Filming The Final Draft!

For our last draft, we filmed over two days which was hard, as one member wasn't present for the filming of our final and most precious draft. We took plenty of pictures and I'm behind the camera for all of them :')
We still had tons of fun filming though!

Assignment #11: Draft Six.

This is the final draft of assignment 11, where we have our inspirational films, how we used film theory, why we used film theory, the storyboard, script and shot list for our final draft of our opening sequence and much more :)

Another Video On Drawing Storyboards:

Despite all of this help with drawing storyboards, I'm still terrible. I hope I've properly conveyed what our idea is though.

Drawing Storyboards.

I've only had to draw the storyboard once, and I was still not confident with what a storyboard should include. I did find a good YouTube video that helped me a bit :)

Reflection On Our Fourth Draft.

I think we have improved tons since our first draft! With every draft I feel we have made a significant improvement, even with minor things. I really liked the ending on this draft, although I do hope we can make further improvements for our fifth and final draft :)

Going over footage.

Having tons of fun filming :D

Reflection On Draft Three.

I think that our third draft is a lot better than the previous two drafts. For those drafts, we didn't really have a character representation in mind, which wasn't a good thing, as our teacher was able to identify this. In response to this, we tried to properly form our character as a geeky teenager, through the use of simple clothes and through the use of geeky glasses. I think that with improvements to the character representation, our audience will be able to relate to her more easily.

Reflection On Our Second Draft.

For our second draft, our director no longer wanted to act as she felt uncomfortable doing so, and directing and acting was a lot of work for her to do. So for our second draft, our actress changed to Joanne, who is our Director Of Photography. Filming for this draft was interesting as we knew we could play with angles a bit more than we had done in the last one. We had a few difficulties with lighting though, as when the character's door swung open, lots of light flooded into the camera lens.
We were also fully aware of time constraints, and this time, didn't film enough! We were nearly 20 seconds under the perfect timing. The titles included bumped us up a bit, so we know for next time just how much we should film, whilst making sure not to go too much over or too much under.

Helpful Blogs I've Found.

Whilst making assignments, I've found some really good blogs that have helped me tons. My TV Blog helped more for the exam section of this course, but overall, I'm really glad to have found such great examples of blogs that have a lot of useful information on them :)

Assignment #16: Strengthening Film Titles.

After our first few opening sequences, it was obvious that we were weak where titles were concerned. We were set the task of looking at opening sequences and noting the particular times when certain names came on screen, and this also helped us to have better title placement.

Transitions In Film And Television.

We failed to use any transitions in the first draft of our opening sequence, so I looked on YouTube for any videos that explain the importance of transitions and what transitions are appropriate where.

Filming The First Opening Sequence. (Day Two)

Reflection On Our First Draft.

I think our first draft was quite good, as other than the preliminary, none of us have had any good practise at filming something and editing it.Also, filming this was a big challenge, as for the first day of filming it was just myself and Gledis. And for the second day of filming we had Vera too. Because of this, I think we did really well to film as much as we did. I was really pleased with the audience feedback we got (see images below), on the Facebook post I made, as it showed that we were heading down the right track and already, people enjoyed what we have to offer. I hope that for the future drafts, we improve on this and can really scare our audience (which is our main aim). The only part of this draft that I'm disappointed with is the length of it, as this brought our grade down a significant amount as it was more like a short film than an opening sequence.

Editing

Editing on iMovie isn't as complicated as I thought it would be, and it was actually quite fun seeing a long clip created from short clips :)
I watched this (see below) , as well as being shown by my teacher to edit properly.

My Thoughts On Our Preliminary:

I didn't realise how hard it is for actors till I acted in our preliminary. I found from this that I don't really enjoy acting much, and that I'd rather have more of a chance to film. It was fun editing it together though, as I think our match on action worked really well and we properly followed the 180 degree rule (even though its quite confusing!)

First day of filming!

Today we started filming for our opening sequence, its fun, but is so far quite challenging, as we have to think about how it will look once its edited together also. It was harder to film today, as two of our group members were unable to come, so we (me and Gledis)  filmed as much as we could film without them and took a few pictures in the process:
Gledis getting ready to film.

Filming.. It looks so creepy on camera!

Me sorting out the camera :)
The trickiest prop to use was probably my personal camera, as we have to keep on making sure it looks okay as Gledis is using it. After our first day of filming, I can't wait to continue next week, as although it was challenging, it was really fun.

180 Degree Rule.

I found a cool video that helped me to properly understand the 180 degree rule, as I was initially quite confused about it when we learnt about it in class.

Assignment #14, Draft 2: Teacher Assessment.

Assignment #14, Draft 2: Self Assessment.

ASSESMENT OF ASSIGNMENT 14 : Preliminary Presentation, Draft 2.
Self Assessment:
In this assignment, I think WWW was…
- We had all of the correct information this time.
- We correctly defined the key terms, such as match on action and the 180 degree rule.
- We had a good use of visuals to support the points we made.

In this assignment, it would have been EBI...
- I had used screen shots from a film, instead of using examples from clips on YouTube that directly show match on action.
- We  used more visuals.
- We  had distributed the work more.
Record of Grade:
In this assignment I would have graded myself with a grade B because I think we made significant improvements and it was much better. I received a grade C1.
Targets to improve:
To improve on this assignment I need to add visuals from an action film into match on action to show that I can identify match on action. I also need to be more descriptive when writing the script.
As a group, we need to label things more, and add more visuals to certain slides.

Teacher Assessment:
See above.
Peer Assessment:
N/A.
Any additional drafts:
This is the second draft. We may redraft a third time.

Assignment #14: Self Assessment.

ASSESMENT OF ASSIGNMENT 14 : Preliminary Presentation.
Self Assessment:
In this assignment, I think WWW was…
- We had a good range of ideas in our brainstorm.
- We had a clear key to show who had produced which slides.

In this assignment, it would have been EBI...
- If we fully understood the requirements of the presentation
- If the script wasn't as long as it is just a preliminary.
Record of Grade:
In this assignment I would have graded myself with a grade D because we misunderstood the requirements and didn't use a wide range of images. I received a grade D2.
Targets to improve:
To improve on this assignment I need to make sure we all understand the 180 degree rule and match on action. We need to put this improved understanding of these things onto our slides in a new draft.
Teacher Assessment:
N/A.
Peer Assessment:
N/A.
Any additional drafts:
We want to alter the slides to improve our grades and our understanding.

Camera Angles and Shots.

We have been looking at camera angles, movement and shots. And I found a few videos on YouTube that cover what we learnt :) They're really handy as I can always refer to them if I'm unsure about what type of shot or angle something is.

Assignment #13: Self Assessment.

ASSESMENT OF ASSIGNMENT 13 : Filming Jobs Task.
Self Assessment:
In this assignment, I think WWW was…
-  I understood the requirements of my job and communicated this well on my slides.
- It was well organised, and my group put relevant information on our slides.

In this assignment, it would have been EBI...
- If we'd all included a range of images to support our text.
Record of Grade:
In this assignment I would have graded myself with a grade B because its clearly presented and my slides have accurate and relevant information on them. I received a grade ___.
Targets to improve:
To improve on this assignment I need to ask my group to also include images to support their slides and job descriptions.
Teacher Assessment:

Researching Thrillers.

Before trying to create our opening sequence, I watched other Thrillers to try and get inspiration for ours. (This was ages ago, but I forgot to upload it :) )
I wrote out some notes on Paranormal Activities, The Grudge and The Resident.

The Resident.

-4 different settings in the two-three minutes.
-short introduction to the character through conversation
-strange glances between characters
-blurred images, epic transitions,

Things associated with what you'd assume to be ghosts etc: doors creaking, shadows, blurred lighting, objects moving, squeaky noises

Strange things: Someone is ALWAYS watching, this Jack character, Max too (Freaky mo-fo) the landlords father killed his mother then shot himself, blurred memories of this are shown. Max sits in her bath tub and masturbates because she sits in there and bathes.

Symbolism: the glass of red wine splashing and breaking - blood will be spilled?, Also, with the discovery of the wine closet,

Non-Linear Narrative - shows that the bloke actually orchestrated meeting her, her moving in, etc etc.

Effects: rewind + slow motion are frequently used, as does Paranormal Activities,

Location: mostly within her home. He (Max) uses the building as a voyeur to get some kind of satisfaction, he uses it to get around to watch her.

Music: used to enhance the viewing 'pleasure'? used to build tension, starts slowly, increases, serious beats.

Paranormal Activities.

-There is a LOT of general conversation about the ghost.
-noises, things associated with the ghost, whispering, scratches down the wall, lights flickering, 'negative energy', things moving, door moving back and forth. Loud unexpected noises, television flickering (static), plants moving, footsteps, door slamming, door squeaking, sheets moving, being blown gently, getting dragged out of bed!!, bite marks on the character (similar to our idea),

Things the characters do: bring in an expert, get a wiji board, film it, their own experiences, research ghosts and demons, find things that technically shouldn't exist, cry, show emotion, see/hear things that others can't , get bitten,

Camera techniques: close ups of the face, cantered angles, wild swinging movements (shows that they're amateurs?)

Setting: In a house, a series of rooms, This doesn't ever change.

Inspiration: Character relations, there's a lady called Dianne and the exact same thing happened to her in the 60s, the same ages, everything, double voice when she's says "We're okay now", we could use that in our opening sequence.

One last thing to shock the audience: The way she slowly crawls towards the camera and smiles, it looks demonic and enigma is created at the last moment when the credits come up and it shows that the story is in actuality, real.

The Grudge.

Credits/ Font & Titles: 'Death', 'Fury' and 'Curse' are all in red font.

Starts with: a man jumping off of the balcony.

Symbolism: the consistent use of red through the different scenes, the credits are also in red, animals showing that there is trouble,

Noises: squeaking floor boards, squeaking doors, phone ringing, slamming doors, A weird breathing/squeaking noise that turned into a faint scream, flickering camera (Like in Paranormal Activities and The Resident), footsteps, doorbell, piercing sounds to create tension, sounds of people breathing as doors open,

Ghosts: faces in the darkness and the use of red for the eyes, the use of heavy make up - the creepy little kid, animals signifying trouble (like in The Resident with the dog barking because Max was there), Eyes being used - show fear, terror etc, Lights turning on by themselves, repeating noises, words, conversations (like in Paranormal Activities), faces cut out of images, seeing the ghost briefly in the mirror and doing a double take

-Creepy attic, just like in Paranormal Activities.
-Bodies found in the attic
-a hand coming from her head
-Yoko's jaw being found in the attic, dripping blood, as she walked down the stairs.
-He can't see Karen but he cam feel her presence
-Flies leading to the attic and then the discovery of the dead body (Like in The Resident when she finds Jack's body)
-Flash backs to the killing of the family ( are hazy/ blurry)
-The ghost standing behind her at the very end.

Non-Linear narrative: It jumps back and forth from the past to the present.

Assignment #12: Self Assessment.

ASSESMENT OF ASSIGNMENT 12 : Preliminary Research Task.
Self Assessment:
In this assignment, I think WWW was…
- I identified positives and negatives of each and marked it accordingly.
- I think I chose good examples of what good and bad preliminaries look like.

In this assignment, it would have been EBI...
- I could've labelled the still shots from the preliminaries.
- If I talked about other things including sound in the scenes and the general mise-en-scéne.
Record of Grade:
In this assignment I would have graded myself with a grade C because I had a good range of images, however I didn't label them. Also, i only focused on the shots and the movement in the preliminaries and didn't mention the mise-en-scéne or other aspects. I received a grade ___.
Targets to improve:
To improve on this assignment I need to label the stills and write about the other things in the preliminary.
